Unionized workers at two major South Korean auto factories walked off their jobs in a partial strike today (Thursday) to protest a U.S. - South Korean free trade agreement.
Employees at Hyundai, South Korea's top automaker, and its affiliate Kia Motors put down their tools for four hours today. A second six-hour strike is scheduled for Friday.
The U.S. and South Korea reached the free trade deal in April and it is expected to be signed this weekend (on June 30). After that, it needs to be approved by legislatures in both countries.
If finalized, the pact could become Washington's biggest free trade deal since the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement.
Both governments say the deal will boost commerce, but many South Korean workers and farmers are against it, fearing it could cause them to lose their jobs.
