U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, a top Republican and a strong supporter of President Bush, has called on the administration to change course and downsize the U.S. military presence in Iraq.
In a major speech on the Senate floor Monday evening, the ranking Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee said U.S. strategy in Iraq is not working. Lugar said the White House's commitment to the troop surge in Iraq is strengthening America's enemies, hurting U.S. foreign policy and increasing the chances of a chaotic retreat from Iraq in the future.
The respected senator said a change in course on Iraq should happen now, adding that if the president waits until the 2008 election campaign is in full swing, the intensity of the confrontation is likely to limit U.S. options.
