Palestinian officials say President Mahmoud Abbas is declaring a state of emergency after days of heavy fighting between his Fatah movement and the rival faction Hamas.
The officials say Mr. Abbas is also dissolving the Hamas-Fatah unity government. A formal announcement is expected shortly.
In the fighting today (Thursday), Hamas militants captured Fatah's main security headquarters in the Gaza Strip, one of the last bastions of Fatah in the territory.
At least 25 people died in today's fighting, bringing to nearly 100 the number killed in six days of clashes.
Hamas is tightening its grip over the Gaza Strip, but Fatah holds sway in the West Bank, where Mr. Abbas is located.
In the southern Gaza town of Rafah, Palestinians said an Israeli tank shell killed at least four Palestinians, including some children. Israel denied it was responsible.
