쿠바정부가 23일 외신기자들에게 보낸 전자 메일에서 카스트로 의장은 그의 건강이 회복되고 있으며 몸무게도 정상을 유지하고 있다고 말했습니다. 카스트로 의장은 지난해 받은 장 수술 결과가 좋지 않아 회복기간이 길어졌다고 말했습니다. 올해 80세인 카스트로 의장은 자신의 나이가 그에게 가장 큰 위험이라고 덧붙였습니다.
카스트로 의장은 지난해 7월 동생인 라울 카스트로 국방장관에게 권력을 임시 이양한 뒤 모습을 드러내지 않고 있습니다. 그러나 쿠바 언론들은 카스트로 의장의 사진과 영상들을 계속 보도한 바 있습니다.

Cuban President Fidel Castro says his health has improved after several operations that -- at first -- were not successful.
In an editorial released by the Cuban government Wednesday, Mr. Castro said that he is getting better and that his weight is stabilizing. He said his recovery from intestinal surgery last year was prolonged because of the initial trouble.
The 80-year-old leader said age is now his greatest danger.
The editorial marks Mr. Castro's first mention of his health in months. He has not appeared in public since temporarily handing power to his brother, Raul, last July. However, Cuban media have released photographs and video of the president.
Cuban officials regard Mr. Castro's health a state secret.
