미국의 뉴욕시는 오는 2012년까지 시내를 운행하는 모든 택시를 엔진과 전기모터를 함께 써 연료효율이 높은 하이브리드 차량으로 바꿀 계획이라고 22일 발표했습니다.
마이클 블룸버그 뉴욕시장은 이날 올해안에 1천대의 택시를 하이브리드 차량으로 바꾼 뒤 2012년까지 단계적으로 교체해 나갈 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
블룸버그 시장은 뉴욕시에는 엄청나게 많은 택시들이 운행되기 때문에 기존 택시들을 하이브리드 차량으로 바꾸면 많은 효과가 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.하이브리드 자동차는 휘발유와 재충전이 가능한 전기배터리로 달리는데 대기중에 배출되는 배기가스가 적습니다. 뉴욕시의 이같은 조치는 현재 뉴욕시가 추진하고 있는 광범위한 환경보전계획의 일환입니다.
뉴욕시는 이번 발표에 앞서 지난 18개월동안 도요타 프리우스와 도요타 하이랜더, 렉서스 RX 400h, 포드 이스케이프 등 연료효율이 높은 하이브리드 엔진을 장착한 400대의 택시를 성공적으로 시험 운행한 바 있습니다.

The Mayor of New York City has announced that all the city's taxis will run on hybrid energy by the year 2012.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the new vehicles will be phased in immediately. Bloomberg said there are "an awful lot" of taxicabs on the streets of New York, so it will make a real difference.
Hybrid vehicles run on a combination of gasoline and a rechargeable electric battery, emitting less exhaust into the atmosphere. The move is part of a larger plan to reduce carbon emissions in New York City.
The hybrids that have been successfully tested in the city include the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Highlander, the Lexus RX 400h and the Ford Escape.
