The U.S. Senate has approved an emergency spending bill for Iraq and Afghanistan that sets a timetable to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq.
The bill appropriates more than 122 billion dollars to fund U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also contains a non-binding measure calling for President Bush to begin removing U.S. troops from Iraq by March 31st of next year.
Senators passed the measure today (Thursday) by a vote of 51 to 47, with one Republican and one Democrat abstaining from the vote. Two Republicans (Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Gordon Smith of Oregon) voted with the Democrats to approve the bill.
Democratic Senator Patty Murray (of Washington state) called the bill "a major step forward." But Republican Richard Shelby (of Alabama) said the bill creates what he called "a date for defeat."
President Bush has repeatedly promised to veto any bill that sets a timeline for removal of troops from Iraq.
