(Eng)

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has offered a new apology for the Japanese military's use of sex slaves during World War Two.

Speaking to a parliamentary committee in Tokyo today (Monday), Mr. Abe said he "apologizes here and now as prime minister" to people who served as so-called "comfort women" for Japanese troops.

Mr. Abe set off an uproar recently when he said there was no evidence Japan's wartime government forced women into sexual service. His comments drew criticism from Japan's Asian neighbors.

Victims' groups say Japan forced about 200-thousand women to serve in World War Two brothels, mainly in Korea and China.

In 1993, Japan's then-chief cabinet secretary (Yohei Kono) issued an apology for the brothels that acknowledged official involvement. Mr. Abe has said that statement still stands and will not be modified by his government.
