유럽연합, EU지도자들은25일 창설 50주년을 맞아 독일의 베를린에서 기념식을 갖고 네델란드와 프랑스의 거부로 추진이 보류된 유럽연합 헌법 승인을 둘러싼 2년 여동안의 교착 상태를 종식하기로 다짐했습니다.
EU 순번제 의장국인 독일의 앙겔라 메르켈 총리는 이날 기념식에서 27개 회원국들에게 오는 2009년 실시되는 유럽의회 선거에 앞서 새로운 법적 틀을 승인할 것을 촉구했습니다.
25일 EU 지도자들이 채택한 문서화된 선언문은 또한 테러와 기후변화 그리고 불법 이민등에 맞서 싸우는데 있어 EU 회원국들이 협력할 것도 다짐하고 있습니다.
EU 전 회원국의 승인을 필요로 하는 유럽 연합 헌법 초안은 지난 2005년 네델란드와 프랑스의 거부로 추진되지 못했습니다.

European leaders have marked the 50th anniversary of the European Union's founding treaty with a pledge to end a two-year stalemate over the union's rejected constitution.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, used today's (Sunday's) ceremony in Berlin to urge the 27-nation union to approve an operating framework before 2009 elections for the European Parliament.
A written declaration approved by EU leaders today also pledges EU countries to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, climate change and illegal immigration.
The German leader did not mention the word "constitution" in the two-page declaration, in deference to Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland. Voters in those countries have voiced reservations about shifting power from national capitals to EU leaders.
A draft charter requiring approval by all member-states was rejected by the Netherlands and France in 2005.
