Iranian media reports say 15 British sailors and marines seized by Iran in a disputed waterway have been transported to Tehran for questioning.
A report by the semi-official Fars news agency said today (Saturday) the British detainees are being asked to explain what Iranian officials call their "aggressive action."
Fars quotes Iranian officials as saying the British navy knowingly and illegally entered Iran's territorial waters, and readings from the computerized navigational equipment aboard the seized British boats proves it.
The Iranian navy seized the British personnel after they conducted a routine inspection of a merchant ship in the disputed Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq.
Britain insists its navy was conducting routine anti-smuggling operations in Iraqi waters, and it has demanded the immediate and safe return of all 15 detainees.
Western media reports say the two countries are communicating through diplomatic channels.
