파키스탄 오지의 부족지역에서 국제 테러리스트 조직, 알-카이다가 훈련기지들을 재건했다고 미국, 뉴욕 타임스 신문이 보도했으나 파키스탄 당국은 이를 강력히 일축하고 있습니다.
뉴욕 타임스 신문은 19일, 알-카이다가 아프가니스탄에 인접한 파키스탄의 외딴 노스 와지리스탄 변경지역에 새로운 활동기지를 구축해 놓았다고 익명의 미국 정보기관과 테러퇴치 담당관들의 말을 인용해 보도했습니다.
미국 관계관들은 파키스탄의 외딴 변경지역에서 몇 개의 알-카이다 훈련기지들을 확인했으며 이 기지들에서 서방 세계 목표를 공격할 준비가 이루어지고 있는지도 모른다고 말한 것을로 이 신문은 보도했습니다.
그러나 파키스탄 외무부의 탄심 아슬람 대변인은 20일, 뉴욕 타임스의 보도 내용을 격하게 일축하면서 테러와의 전쟁에 있어서 주요 동맹인 미국이 그런 정보는 파키스탄측에 통보한 적이 없다고 말했습니다.
아슬람 대변인은 알-카이다의 기지가 파키스탄내에 존재한다는 증거가 있다면 그런 정보는 파키스탄과 공유해야 한다고 지적하면서 이같이 말했습니다.

Pakistan is sharply rejecting a U.S. newspaper report that says al Qaida terrorists have reestablished training bases inside the country's remote tribal areas.
"The New York Times" on Monday quoted anonymous U.S. intelligence and counter-terrorism officials as saying that al Qaida has established a new operations hub in Pakistan's remote North Waziristan region, near the Afghan border. According to the report, U.S. officials have identified several new training compounds in the area where terrorists may be preparing attacks against Western targets.
Today (Tuesday) the spokeswoman for Pakistan's foreign ministry angrily rejected the allegations.
Tasnim Aslam said no such information had been passed along to Pakistan, a key U.S. ally in the war on terror. She said if evidence of al Qaida bases exists, it should be shared with Pakistan.
The spokeswoman also asserted that her government will do whatever is necessary to defeat al Qaida.
