이란의 핵무기 추구와 이라크에 대한 파멸적 내정간섭을 가리켜 부시미국대통령은 미국이 이란과의 관계에서 겪고 있는 어려움은 이란국민과는 무관하다고 말했습니다.
문제는 자국국민을 고립시키고 국제 사회에서의 이란국민의 진정한 역할을 거부하는 행동을 취하고 있는 이란정부 때문이라고 부시대통령은 강조했습니다.
이란정권은 자국시민들이 당연히 누려마땅한 많은 기본적인 자유들을 계속 거부하고 있습니다. 이란의 저명한 지식인 두명은 최근 미국방문을 위한 출국을 금지당했습니다.
테헤란에 있는 타르 비아트 모다르이즈대학교의 라쉠 아가하자리 역사학교수는 지난 2월초에 매사추세츠 공과대학교, MIT에서 민주주의와 종교에 관해 강연할 예정이었습니다. 하셈 아가자리교수는 이란의 널리 알려진 학생지도자 , 모 메이니씨와 동행할 계획이었습니다.
이란-이라크전쟁에서 부상당한 참전군인인 아가하 자리교수는 지난 2002년 이란에서 강연을 행한뒤 배교혐의로 사형을 선고받았습니다. 그 강연에서 아가하 자리 교수는 이슬람의 근본주의 시각을 맹목적으로 추종하지 말도록 이란인들에게 경고했습니다.
아가하 자리교수는 2년간 수감되었다가 결국 국제사회압력에 불복한 이란정부에 의해 석방되었습니다. 한편, 학생지도자, 모메니씨는 2005년 아가자리교수의 석방을 요구하는 학생시위를 조직한 혐의로 5년 집행유예를 선고받았습니다.
최근에는 이란 여성 인터넷 기자 세명도 정부에 의해 해외 여행을 금지당했습니다. 파다 래디오방송과의 회견에서 모메니씨는 이란정부는 국내 지식인들과 시민사회 운동가들을 고립시키고 이들의 외부세계와의 유대관계를 단절시키려 한다고 말했습니다.
이런 사례들은 이란국민의 복지에 대한 미국의 심오한 우려를 확연히 보여주는 것입니다. 또한 바로 이러한 이유때문에 부시미국대통령은 이란정권이 국민의 가장 기본적인 권리를 박탈하고 위대한 국가전통에도 불구하고 개인의 잠재력을 완전 실현하지 못하도록 가로 막고 있다고 비난하고 있는 것입니다.

Referring to Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and destructive interference in Iraq, President George W. Bush says U.S. difficulties with Iran are "not with the Iranian people:"
"My problem is with a government that takes actions that end up isolating their people and end up denying the Iranian people their true place in the world."
The Iranian regime continues to deny its citizens many of the basic freedoms they so rightly deserve.
Two prominent Iranian intellectuals were recently barred from leaving Iran for a trip to the United States. Hashem Aghajari [ah-gaha-jah-REE], a history professor at Tarbiat [Tahr-bee-at] Modarres [Moe-dahr-ees] University in Tehran, was scheduled to give a lecture on democracy and religion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in early February. He was to be accompanied by well-known Iranian student leader, Abdollah Momeni [Moe-may-nee].
A disabled veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, Mr. Aghajari was sentenced to death for apostasy after giving a speech in Iran in 2002. In the speech, Mr. Aghajari warned his countrymen against blindly following a fundamentalist vision of Islam.
He served almost two years in prison before the Iranian government, under international pressure, released him. In 2005, Mr. Momeni was given a five-year suspended sentence for organizing student protests demanding Mr. Aghajari's release.
Recently, three female Iranian on-line journalists were also barred by the government from traveling outside Iran. In an interview with Radio Farda, Mr. Momeni said that the Iranian government is seeking "to isolate intellectuals and civil society activist inside the society and to cut their ties with the outside world."
These examples clearly illustrate the United States' deep concern for the welfare of the people of Iran. That is why President Bush has said the Iranian regime is causing the Iranian people to suffer "deprivation" of their most fundamental rights and keeping them, despite their "great tradition," from being "able to realize their full potential."
