이라크 수도 바그다드 주둔 미군 병력증강이 5월까지 점진적으로 계속된다고 미 국방부가 밝혔습니다.
미 국방부의 브라이언 휘트먼 대변인은 7일, 바그다드에서 계속되는 폭탄공격 등을 제압하기 위한 미국-이라크 대규모 보안작전이 시작된 것으로 미군 당국이 확인한 가운데 이같이 말했습니다.
미군과 이라크 병력 약 9만 명이 종파간 폭력충돌 사태가 매일 벌어져 수 백 명의 민간인들이 살해된 바그다드 시내의 가장 위험한 지역으로 진입할 예정입니다.
한편, 이라크 서부지역, 알-안바르주에서 미 해병대 수송용 헬리콥터 한 대가 추락했다고 미군 당국이 확인한 가운데 알-카이다와 연계된 한 수니파 저항단체는 인터넷에 올린 성명을 통해 자신들이 미 해병대 헬리콥터를 격추했다고 주장했으나 별도로 확인되지는 않았습니다.

A long-awaited U.S. and Iraqi security operation in Baghdad is underway in an effort to curb attacks that have killed hundreds in recent days.
A U.S. military spokesman (Major General William Caldwell) confirmed that the crackdown has begun.
A U.S. Defense Department spokesman (Bryan Whitman) said there will be a gradual buildup of troops in Baghdad lasting until May.
The military also has confirmed that a Marine transport helicopter crashed today (Wednesday) in western al-Anbar province, killing all seven personnel aboard.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the crash.
An al-Qaida-linked Sunni insurgent group says, in an Internet posting, that it shot down the helicopter. The claim has not been independently confirmed.
