말리 대통령 출신의 코나레 위원장은 정상회의 개막 연설에서, 지난 4년간 전투로 20만명이 사망한 다르푸르에 대한 공격을 중단하라고 수단에 촉구했습니다.
수단은 53개 회원국의 아프리카 연합의 의장국이 되려고 하고 있는 가운데, 여러 회원국들은 수단의 그같은 움직임에 반대하고 있습니다.
수단 정부는 의장국이 되기 위해 싸울 것이라고 말하고 있습니다. 다르푸르 지역의 폭력 사태 때문에 1년 전에 순번제 의장국 자리를 포기해야 했던 수단은 올해 의장국이 될 수 있을 것이라는 약속을 받았습니다.
아프리카 연합은 다르푸르에 7천명의 평화유지군을 주둔시키고 있습니다. 많은 사람들은 수단 정부가 다르푸르에서 폭력을 부추기고 있다고 믿고 있고, 이는 수단이 의장국이 될 수 없도록 막을 수 있는 충분한 이유가 된다고 말하고 있습니다.

A two-day African Union summit has begun in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa with the group's top diplomat criticizing Sudan for deadly violence in its Darfur region.
Alpha Oumar Konare (- the former president of Mali -) opened the meeting today (Monday) by urging Sudan to stop attacks in Darfur, where fighting has killed an estimated 200-thousand people in the past four years.
Sudan is making a bid to chair the 53-member organization, a move opposed by several member nations.
The Sudanese government says it will fight for the chairmanship. Sudan was promised the position a year ago when it was passed over for the revolving position because of violence in Darfur.
The A.U. has seven thousand peacekeepers in Darfur, where many people believe the violence is fueled by the Sudanese government itself. They say that is sufficient cause to deny Sudan the A.U. chairman's post.
