이들은 공동 서한을 통해 부시 대통령이 지구온난화 가스 배출양의 상한 기준을 의무화하는 조치를 받아들일 것을 촉구했습니다.
이 조치는 기업들이 배출 상한 기준을 어겼을 경우 이에 대한 처벌을 피하기 위해 해당 위반양 만큼의 크레딧을 구입하도록 하고 있습니다. 상한 규제를 지킨 회사들은 비용 절감을 위해 크레딧을 위반 회사에 판매할 수 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 기업들의 지구온난화 가스 배출에 대한 상한 기준을 의무화하는 것을 반대해왔습니다. 부시 대통령은 22일 연두교서에서 이 문제에 대한 의견을 밝힐 예정입니다.

Chief executives of 10 major U.S. companies are urging President Bush (today/Monday) to support a more aggressive stance to fight climate change.
In a joint letter, the business leaders asked Mr. Bush to embrace a system of mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions.
The system would allow companies to purchase emission credits to avoid punishment if they cannot meet the limits. Other companies could trade their excess credits to reduce costs.
President Bush has consistently opposed mandatory caps for companies. He is expected to discuss energy policy and the environment in his annual State of the Union address Tuesday.
The business leaders included the chief executives of Alcoa and General Electric.
Members of the new Democratic-led Congress have introduced several bills with different versions of the cap-and-trade approach to deal with climate change.
