(Eng)

A report by the non-governmental organization Freedom House concludes a global "freedom stagnation" has developed over the past decade, and points to setbacks last year in Asia.

The Washington-based group's annual survey of worldwide political rights and civil liberties, "Freedom in the World 2007", was released today (Wednesday).

Freedom House rates countries as "free", "partly free" or "not free." The report indicates a modest decline in the state of freedom in 2006 compared to 2005. It says about one-half of the people in the world living in "not free" conditions live in one country -- China.

Asia experienced the largest proportion of lowered freedom scores in 2006, with Thailand, the Philippines and East Timor experiencing setbacks.

The report says the trend over the past decade is disturbing, with a lack of significant breakthroughs, and the emergence of authoritarian regimes that are aggressively hostile to democracy. It cites Russia, Venezuela and Iran as examples of this negative trend.
