이란 외무부는 이라크 북부에서 미군에 의해 구금된 자국민 다섯명은 합법적인 활동을 하고 있던 외교관들이라고 밝혔습니다.
미군은 조사 결과 체포된 이란인들이 이라크내 저항세력에게 자금과 무기를 제공하는 이란 혁명수비대에 연계돼 있음이 밝혀졌다고 말하고 있습니다.
이란의 무하마드 알리 호세이니 대변인은 14일 미군의 주장은 사실과 다르며 미군의 행동을 정당화하기 위한 노력에서 나온 것이라고 말하면서 구금중인 이란인들을 석방하라고 미국에 요구했습니다.
이들 이란인들은 지난 11일 미군이 이라크 북부 이르빌시의 한 건물을 급습하는 과정에서 체포됐습니다. 이라크 정부는 이 건물이 이란의 연락 사무소로 사용되고 있었으며 영사관으로 바뀌는 과정에 있었다고 말했습니다.
한편 미군은 이라크 군이 수도 바그다드 북쪽의 시아파 주민들이 주로 거주하는 발라드 마을에서 세 명의 저항분자들을 체포했다고 밝혔습니다. 이들 체포된 세 명은 회교사원에서 만나던 중 체포됐습니다.

Iran's Foreign Ministry says five Iranians detained by U.S. forces in northern Iraq are diplomats who were engaged in legal activity.
The U.S. military says investigators have learned that the detainees are tied to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard group (the Qods Force) that provides money and weapons to insurgents in Iraq.
An Iranian spokesman said today (Sunday) the U.S. accusations are "incorrect" and aimed at creating a climate that justifies U.S. military actions. He demanded the U.S. release the five Iranians.
The Iranians were detained Thursday during a U.S. raid on a building in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil. Iraq's government says the building was an Iranian liaison office in the process of becoming a consulate.
In another development, the U.S. military says Iraqi forces captured three insurgents today in the predominantly Shi'ite town of Balad (north of Baghdad) as they were meeting in a mosque.
