Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on a visit to Berlin, has won support from German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a continued European Union arms embargo against China.
Speaking Wednesday in the German capital alongside Ms. Merkel, whose government holds the rotating EU presidency, Mr. Abe said China's economic growth is, in his words, an opportunity for the world. But he also cited problems with China's rapidly-expanding defense budget.
He called the lack of transparency in Chinese defense spending an issue that concerns all of East Asia. For her part, Ms. Merkel said she is not thinking about ending the embargo.
She also called on Beijing to "act according to the rule of law," and to provide greater Chinese protections for intellectual property rights.
