미국의 소리 방송이 입수한 바에 따르면, 카타르 도하에 있는 미군 최고 사령관이 소말리아 최남단에 있는 라스 캄보니 지역에 알카에다 요원들이 은신해 있다는 제보를 받아 공습을 명령했습니다.
소말리아 관리들은 이번 공습은 지난 1998년 케냐와 탄자니아 주재 미 대사관 폭파사건의 용의자이자 알 카에다의 동아프리카 지역 최고 사령관을 표적으로 한 것이었다고 설명했습니다.
이들 관리들은 그러나 테러분자들이 사망했는지 여부는 확인하지 않았습니다. 한편 압둘라히 유수프 소말리아 임시 대통령은 미국은 대사관 폭파사건에 연루된 테러분자들을 공격할 권한을 갖고 있다고 말했습니다.

Somalia's government says U.S. warplanes have carried out air strikes on suspected al-Qaida hideouts in the south of the country, killing an unknown number of people.
Somali officials say American gunships raided several sites Monday, including Ras Kamboni in the southern tip of Somalia, along the Kenyan border.
They say the air strikes targeted al-Qaida's top East Africa commander and suspects in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The officials could not confirm whether the terrorists were killed.
Somali interim President Abdullahi Yusuf says the United States has the right to strike at terrorists involved in the embassy bombings.
He was speaking today (Tuesday) at a news conference in Mogadishu, a day after entering the capital for the first time since taking office in 2004.
