부시 대통령의 새 이라크 전략 공개를 한 주 앞둔 시점에서 정보 수뇌부 교체가 추진되는데 이어, 이라크와 중동 지역 미군 사령관도 바뀔 예정입니다. 정부 관리들에 따르면 부시 대통령은 이라크 주둔 미군 사령관 조지 케이시 대장 후임으로 데이비즈 페트로스 중장을 내정했습니다. 페트로스 중장은 2004년 이라크 치안 병력 훈련을 담당했던 인물입니다. 중동 지역을 관할하는 존 애비제이드 중부군 사령관 후임으로는 윌리엄 팰런 해군제독이 내정됐습니다.
부시 대통령은 이라크 폭력 사태를 진정시키기 위해서 단기간 동안 이라크 주둔 미군 병력을 늘이는 방안도 검토하고 있습니다. 병력 증편 계획은 특히 바그다드 지역에 집중되어 있습니다. 이라크 주둔 연합군 부사령관인 사이먼 메이올 영국군 소장은 5일 단기적인 병력 증강 외에도 다양한 노력들이 이라크 상황 호전에 도움을 줄 수 있다고 말했습니다.

부시 대통령은 다음 주에 새 이라크 전략을 공개할 예정입니다. 새 전략은 이라크 전쟁에서 승리하기 위해서 군사, 정치, 경제 측면에서 새롭게 추진할 조치들을 담을 예정입니다.

President Bush has named retired Navy Vice Admiral Mike McConnell to become the next director of national intelligence. Mr. Bush said admiral McConnell, who served as head of the National Security Agency in the 1990s, has the intellect and experience to succeed in the post.

"He has earned our nation's highest award for service in the intelligence community. As DNI, Mike will report directly to me and I am confident he will give me the best information and analysis that America's intelligence community can provide."

The move comes as President Bush prepares next week to unveil a new strategy on Iraq. Mr. Bush has named new military commanders to be in charge of Iraq and the Middle East. Army Lieutenant General David Petraeus, who was in charge of training Iraq's army in 2004, will replace General George Casey. Navy Admiral William Fallon, who currently heads Pacific Command, will succeed retiring Army General John Abizaid as head of U.S. Central Command.
President Bush is considering temporarily sending more troops to Iraq to help quell the violence, especially in Baghdad. British Major General Simon Mayall -- who is deputy commander of multinational forces in Iraq -- told reporters (Friday) a troop surge would be helpful, but so would other measures.
BRITISH MAJOR GENERAL SIMON MAYALL:
"What we need in a counterinsurgency operation is a surge across every element of the campaign, every line of operation. We need a surge in government approach to this issue, and by that I mean the Iraqi government. we need surge in ministerial capacity to carry out their responsibilities -- within a sovereign nation. We need a surge in probably economic activity here. So this is a complex issue."
