Israel disputes comments by Hamas that significant progress has been made in talks to free a soldier held captive by Palestinian militants in Gaza.
Officials say Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met today (Monday) with top security officials, and concluded that demands by the militant group Hamas were excessive.
Palestinian armed factions have demanded Israel release more than one thousand prisoners in exchange for Corporal Gilad Shalit, abducted in June by gunmen who tunneled into Israel from the Gaza strip.
On Sunday, a Hamas government spokesman said there had been a breakthrough in Egyptian-led efforts to negotiate a prisoner swap. But, Israel denies the claim.
Officials have said the prisoner swap will be discussed when Mr. Olmert meets with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt Thursday.
