새해 전날 태국의 수도 방콕에서 폭탄테러로 최소한 두 명의 사망자와 스물여섯명의 부상자가 발생한 가운데 태국경찰은 이번 사건의 배후에 회교 과격분자들이 있는 것 같진 않다고 말했습니다.
태국 경찰은 31일 방콕 시내 승리 기념관 인근에서 폭탄이 폭발해 버마인 한 명을 포함해 두 명이 숨졌다고 밝히고 이번 사건이 정치적 동기에서 비롯됐을 가능성을 제기했습니다.
이 날 방콕시내 거리와 쇼핑 센터 등에서 최소한 다섯 건의 다른 폭탄테러 사건이 발생했습니다.
태국 과도정부 총리인 수라유드 출라논트 장군은 앞서 시내 상황이 통제하에 있다고 말했습니다. 출라논트 총리는 일부 폭탄 테러 희생자들이 치료를 받고있는 병원을 방문하고 이같은 일이 더 이상 발생하지 않도록 하기 위해 정부가 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
이번 사건에 따라 방콕 시 정부 관리들은 여러 새해 축하행사를 취소했습니다.

Thai officials say Muslim insurgents were probably not behind a string of New Years Eve bombings in the capital of Bangkok that killed two people and injured 26 more.
Security sources said today (Sunday) the bombings might have been politically-motivated.
Police said two people, including a Burmese person, were killed when a bomb exploded in the city center, near the Victory Monument. At least five other explosions occurred on streets and at shopping centers.
Thai Prime Minister General Surayud Chulanont earlier said the situation in Bangkok is under control, after six bombs exploded across the city, hours before New Year celebrations.
During a visit to a hospital where some of the victims were taken for treatment, the prime minster said the government will do all it can to prevent further trouble.
The incidents prompted Bangkok officials to cancel several New Year's celebrations.
