부시 대통령은 이와 관련해 외교관과 군 지휘관, 전직 행정부 고위 관계자 등 다양한 전문가들로 부터 이라크 문제 해결방안에 대한 조언을 듣고 있습니다. 부시 대통령은 타리크 알-하쉬미 부통령 등 이라크 정부 지도자들로 부터도 의견을 수렴하고 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 12일 백악관에서 하쉬미 이라크 부통령을 만난 뒤 가진 기자회견에서 하쉬미 부통령과 이라크 정부의 성공을 지원하기 위해 미국이 취할 수 있는 방안들에 대해 논의했다고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 그러나 이라크 정책 변경에 대한 자신의 생각을 구체적으로 밝히지 않은 채 이라크에서의 유혈사태를 종식시키려 한다는 희망에 대해서만 언급했습니다.
부시 대통령은 하쉬미 부통령은 많은 어려움에도 불구하고 단합되고 평화로운 이라크 건설을 위해 노력할 용의가 있다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 하쉬미 부통령이 이라크 내 극단주의자들과 살인자들의 공격으로 인한 이라크 국민의 고통에 대해 설득력 있게 설명했다면서, 미국의 목표는 평화를 바라는 대다수 이라크인들을 지원하는 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 하쉬미 부통령과 이라크 국민들에게 보내는 미국의 메시지는 이라크 정부가 좀더 효율적이 되도록 지원하겠다는 것이라면서 이라크 정부가 나름의 공약과 이상을 실현할 수 있도록 돕고 싶다고 말했습니다.

한편 부시 대통령은 하쉬미 부통령과의 회담에 앞서 이라크 내 미군 지휘관들과 잘마이 카릴자드 이라크 주재 미국대사 등과 화상회의를 열었습니다.
토니 스노 백악관 대변인은 비공개로 진행된 이 화상회의에 대한 구체적인 설명을 거부했습니다. 스노 대변인은 부시 대통령이 이미 이라크 정책 변경과 관련한 대체적인 윤곽에 대해 결정했다면서 그러나 구체적인 내용을 다듬기 위해 좀더 시간이 필요한 것으로 느끼고 있다고 말했습니다.
스노 대변인은 부시 대통령은 일부 매우 실질적이고 전술 측면에 해당하는 질문들을 갖고 있다면서, 이 때문에 이라크 정책 변경을 위한 협의와 조정 절차가 계속될 것이라고 말했습니다.

President Bush has put off the announcement of changes in his Iraq policy until sometime in early 2007. VOA's Paula Wolfson reports from the White House, the president is continuing to seek input from experts inside and outside the U.S. government.
The president had been expected to deliver a major speech before the end of December laying out a revised strategy for Iraq.
But now he has decided to give the review and recommendation process a bit more time, and has put off any announcements until 2007.
He is putting questions to and seeking advice from a broad range of sources including diplomats, military commanders and former U.S officials. He is also consulting with Iraqi leaders, including the country's vice-president, Tariq al-Hashimi.
After their meeting Tuesday at the White House, Mr. Bush said they talked about steps the United States can take to help the Iraqi government succeed. The president did not go into specifics, and gave no clues to his thinking on possible changes in strategy. Instead, he spoke in general terms about his desire to end the bloodshed in Iraq.
He said Hashimi, the highest ranking Sunni Arab politician in that country, has lost loved ones to sectarian violence, yet remains committed to national unity. "In spite of his grief, and in spite of the pain in his heart, he is willing to work for a united Iraq and a peaceful Iraq," he said.
President Bush said the vice-president spoke eloquently of the suffering Iraqi families have endured at the hands of extremists and killers. He said America's objective is to support the vast majority of Iraqis who want peace. "And so Mr. Vice-President, my message to you today and the Iraqi people is we want to help your government be effective. We want to help your government live up to its words and ideals," he said.
Hashimi said the situation is difficult. But he stressed with good will and strong determination, Iraq can succeed. "There is a chance and I can assure you there is a great and real chance to get out of this present dilemma," he said.
Earlier in the day, President Bush conferred by teleconference with U.S. military commanders in Iraq and U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad.
The meeting took place behind closed doors and White House Spokesman Tony Snow refused to provide details to reporters. Snow indicated the president has already decided on the broad outline of his revised Iraq strategy, but feels he needs more time to work out the specifics. "He has got some very clear practical, tactical and other questions, and so certainly the process and consultations will continue and people will be working very hard between now and the time the president has formulated the policy and is prepared to share his thoughts with the public and the world," he said.
Snow said the president wants the matter handled quickly but also wants it handled well.
