The U.S. Congress is working to clear the way for the final approval of legislation on a U.S.-India Civilian Nuclear Cooperation deal.
Lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives held a special conference late Tuesday on the controversial pact.
Republican Congressman Henry Hyde (of Illinois) said the deal is the cornerstone of a new strategic partnership that should contribute to stability in South Asia. He also spoke favorably of a provision in the bill that would require India to participate in international efforts to prevent Iran from pursuing its nuclear weapons program.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (of Tennessee) said he assured Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the legislation is set for completion this week.
Frist spoke by phone Tuesday with Mr. Singh.
