필리핀 여성을 성폭행한 혐의로 기소됐던 미국 해병대원이 징역 40년을 선고받았습니다.
미 해병대 소속 다니엘 스미스 병장은 지난해 11월 수도 마닐라 북부의 수비크 만에 있는 한 술집 밖에서 동료 병사들이 환호하는 가운데 한 여성을 성폭행한 혐의로 4일 유죄판결을 받았습니다.
그러나 옆에서 응원했던 혐의로 기소된 다른 해병대원 세 명은 무죄를 선고받았습니다.스미스 병장은 성 관계가 피해여성의 동의아래 이뤄졌다며 무죄를 주장했습니다.
그러나 담당판사는 스미스 병장이 피해여성이 만취해 성 관계에 동의할 수 없는 상태였다는 것을 알고 있었다고 말했습니다.
스미스 병장의 변호인은 항소할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 이 사건은 필리핀에서 반미 감정을 불러 일으켰습니다.

A court in the Philippines has sentenced a U.S. Marine to 40 years in prison for raping a local woman.
The Manila court found Lance Corporal Daniel Smith guilty today (Monday) of raping the woman in November last year outside a bar where they had been drinking. The attack took place in a van near the former U.S. naval base of Subic Bay, north of the capital.
Smith denied raping the woman, saying the sex was consensual.
But the judge said he was "morally convinced" the Marine had committed the crime. The judge said Smith knew the woman was drunk, and could not have consented.
The court acquitted three other Marines, saying the rape charge against them had not been proven. They were accused of cheering on Smith.
