Pope Benedict has left Turkey, ending his first papal visit to a predominately Muslim nation.
Before departing Istanbul today (Friday), the pontiff said he hoped his four-day visit to the officially secular country would contribute to a better understanding between religions.
During his historic visit, the pontiff sought to heal the nearly thousand-year-old division between Rome and the world's Orthodox Christian Church, which split (in the 11th century) over differences of theology and papal authority.
Benedict also offered wide-ranging messages of reconciliation to Muslims during his trip, including a visit to Instanbul's famous Blue Mosque.
He joined Istanbul's Grand Mufti Mustafa Cagrici in silent prayer Thursday in the 17th-century mosque.
In September, the pope provoked an outcry from Muslims with remarks viewed by many as criticizing Islam.
