영국 당국은 최근 방사능 물질로 독살된 전 러시아 첩보원에 대한 조사의 일환으로 항공기 5기에서 방사능 물질을 검색하고 있다고 말했습니다.
영국의 존 리드 국가 안보부장관은 당국이 영국 항공기 3기와 러시아 항공기 2기를 조사하고 있다고 말했습니다. 영국 항공은 현재 검색 대상 자사 항공기를 이용했던 승객 3만 3천여명을 접촉하고 있습니다. 영국 항공은 그러나 승객이 위험물질에 노출됐을 가능성은 적다고 말했습니다.
리드 장관은 또 방사성 물질의 흔적이 영국내 12곳에서 발견됐다고 말했습니다.
러시아 당국 역시 국내 공항내 방사성 물질의 통제를 강화하고 젤 등 액체물질의 이전에 초점을 맞춰 보안검색으 확대하고 있습니다.
British authorities say five aircraft are now being monitored for possible contamination as part of the investigation into the radioactive poisoning death of a former Russian spy.
British Home Secretary John Reid says the government is interested in two Russian aircraft as well as three British Airways planes. British Airways is contacting 33-thousand passengers who traveled on those aircraft. It says the risk to the public is small.
Reid also says evidence of radiation has been found at about 12 sites in Britain.
In Russia, authorities are tightening radiation controls at airports and increasing security regarding the transport of liquids and gels.
Former spy Alexander Litvinenko died of radiation poisoning a week ago. Before his death, he said he was poisoned for his opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a claim the Kremlin denies.
