(Eng)

The International Committee of the Red Cross (I.C.R.C.) says Burma's military rulers have ordered the organization to stop its humanitarian work in five border areas of the country.

In a statement released today, (Monday,) the I.C.R.C. says Burmese authorities forced the group to close field offices in those regions (Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Hpa-an, Taunggyi and Kyaing Tong).

The aid group says the closures have made it effectively impossible to provide assistance and protection to Burmese civilians living in areas where ethnic minorities are often in conflict with the government.

The I.C.R.C. says it "utterly deplores" Burma's decision to further restrict its work in the country.

The group says Burma also has refused to allow Red Cross workers to resume visits to political prisoners. Burma ordered a stop to the prison visits in December 2005.
