에르도간 총리는 라트비아에서 북대서양조약기구, 나토 정상회의를 이유로 들면서 당초 교황을 만나지 않을 계획이었습니다. 그러나 총리 대변인은 27일 에르도간 총리가 라트비아 수도 리가로 떠나기 앞서 앙카라 공항에서 교황을 접견할 것이라고 말했습니다.
앞서 26일 터키의 최대 도시 이스탄불에서는 수만명의 시위자들이 교황의 터키 방문에 반대하는 대규모 시위를 벌였습니다.

Aides say Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has changed his plans and will meet with Pope Benedict on Tuesday in Ankara, at the start of a controversial four-day papal visit.
Mr. Erdogan had originally planned not to meet the pope, citing his travel to a NATO summit in Latvia. But today (Monday), a spokesman said the meeting will take place at Ankara's airport, before the prime minister departs for Riga.
On Sunday, tens of thousands of protesters rallied in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, to denounce the pope's visit.
Muslim anger toward the pontiff erupted across much of the Islamic world in September, after the pope quoted negative comments about Islam made by a 14th century Byzantine emperor. He said he did not share those views.
