한국 정부 당국은 전북 익산시 농가에서 발생한 조류독감 감염 확산을 막기 위해 조류독감 발병 농가로부터 반경 500미터 안에 있는 닭 23만6천 여마리에 대한 도살처분을 시작했습니다.
한국 정부당국은 25일, 익산시 양계농장에서 인체감염 위험이 있는 H5N1 계통의 조류독감 감염이 발생했음을 확인하고 지난 주에 약6천 여마리의 닭은 도살처분한데 이어 대량 처분에 착수했습니다.
한국 농림부 김창섭, 가축방역과장은 조류독감 발병 농가로부터 반경 10킬로미터까지 방역지역을 확대하고 생닭의 이동을 금지했다고 밝혔습니다.
김창섭 방역과장은 이번 조류독감 발병 원인이 이동 철새들과 관광객 및 닭 밀수입 등에 의한 것일 가능성이 있다고 말했으나 아직 정확한 원인은 밝혀지지 않고 있습니다.

South Korean authorities have begun slaughtering more than 200-thousand poultry around the site of a bird flu outbreak in the southwest of the country.
South Korea's Agriculture Ministry says workers will cull 236-thousand chickens within a 500-meter radius of the affected farm in the city of Iksan.
Authorities confirmed Saturday an outbreak of the dangerous H5N1 strain of bird flu at the Iksan farm. The outbreak began last week and killed about six-thousand chickens.
South Korea's government is expanding the quarantine zone around the farm to a 10-kilometer radius. Police and soldiers are to restrict the movement of people and livestock in the zone to prevent the virus from spreading.
A South Korean veterinary official (Kim Chang-seob) says the cause of the bird flu outbreak remains unclear. He says possible sources include migratory birds, tourist traffic and poultry smuggled from abroad.
