The British government says a former Russian spy who became a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin was poisoned with a radioactive substance.
Authorities in London confirmed Friday that Alexander Litvinenko was killed by a heavy dose of the radioactive element called polonium 210. The rare substance was found in Litvinenko's urine, in his home in Britain, and in the London hotel and restaurant he visited the day he became ill.
The British government formally asked Russia on Friday for any information it has on Litvinenko that would help police investigate the case.
Shortly before his death Thursday, Litvinenko blamed President Putin by name for poisoning him. The Russian leader denies any involvement in Litvinenko's death.
The 43-year-old Litvinenko was granted British citizenship last month after defecting from Russia six years ago.
