수년동안 50대 이상의 여성들은 임신을 하거나 출산을 하기 위해 치료를 받아 왔습니다. 최근 루마니아의 에이드리아나 일리스쿠 라는 한 여성이 66살의 나이에 아이를 출산하는데 성공한 사실이 알려져 세계적인 화제가 되었습니다. 미국의 벳찌 니덜멘이라는 한 여성도 50살의 나이에 아이를 출산했지만, 니덜맨씨는 몇몇 사람들의 반응에 놀랐다고 말합니다.
'저의 출산 때문에 감격스러워 하는 사람들도 있었습니다. 하지만 다른 몇 몇 사람들은 당황스러워 했습니다. 제가 알지도 못하는 한 남자는 제게 다가와서, 제가 50살이라는 나이에 임신을 한것은 역겨운 일이라고 생각한다고 말했습니다.'
니덜맨씨는 이미 9살난 아들이 하나 있고, 자신의 나이가 임신을 하는데 불리한 조건이 된다고 생각하지 않았다고 말합니다.

미국 남가주 대학 연구팀은 임신을 가능하게 하는 치료를 받은 30대와 40대, 그리고 50대 여성들을 연구했고, 연구팀의 앤 스테이너 박사는 니덜맨씨의 의견과 상통하는 결과를 얻어냈다고 말합니다.
결론은 50살 이후의 나이에 임신하는 여성들이 40대나 30대에 임신하는 여성들에 비해 아이를 기르는 것으로 부터 오는 스트레스로 인해 더 많이 힘들어 하지 않는 다는 것입니다.
스테이너 박사는 또, 늦은 나이에 임신하는것에 대한 반대는 사실에 입각한것이라기 보다, 늦은 나이에 임신해서 엄마가 된 여성들은 약하고 엄마가 되기 위해 부족하다 라는 편견에서 오는 것이라고 지적합니다.

Older men are often applauded for fathering children late in life, but what about older mothers? Their pregnancies often meet with disapproval and provoke public debate about the medical and ethical considerations of older women giving birth. But a new study by scientists in the western U.S. state of California may change that opinion. VOA'S Carol Pearson has more.

For years women in their 50's or even their 60's have used fertility treatments to get pregnant and give birth. Adriana Iliescu, a Romanian woman, made world news when she gave birth at the age of 66. When Betsy Neiderman and her husband had a baby when she was 50, she was surprised at some of the reactions she got.
"I got people saying they were thrilled. And I got people who were quite upset. A man came up to me, whom I didn't know, he was just at this party, and said he thought it was disgusting that I was pregnant at my age."
The couple already had a nine year old son. And Neiderman said she did not consider her age to be a disadvantage.
"I've had a lot of time to think about myself and what I want out of life. I'm lucky because everything happened to me late in life and I feel like I have more energy now than I did in my 20's and 30's."
And that's exactly what research at the University of Southern California has found. Researchers there studied women in their 30's, 40's and 50's who had fertility treatments. Dr. Anne Steiner.
"The verdict really is that these mothers that are conceiving after age 50 do not suffer from more parenting stress than younger mothers that conceive at age 40 or age 30."
Dr. Steiner suggests opposition to older mothers may be based more on prejudice than on evidence that these women are poor parents. Marilyn Nolan gave birth to twin boys when she was 55.
"Everybody thinks they're our grandchildren, and I don't even try to explain to most people. I just go right along with it."
Researchers have not yet studied the impact on the children of having an older mother. But an earlier study at the University of Southern California showed that older women are just as capable as younger women. of bearing a child Since the 1990's, Dr. Richard Paulson has led research on older mothers who use in vitro fertilization to get pregnant.
"The older uterus is able to respond and is able to adapt to the pregnancy and carry it to term." NARRATOR: Dr. Paulson says there is no reason to exclude women over 50 from fertility treatments based on age alone.
"Here we go." He says these older mothers are usually healthy and physically fit.
