아시아경제협력체, APEC 정상회담에 참석하기 위해 베트남에 도착한 미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 17일, 베트남 지도자들과 만나 베트남의 경제개혁과 미국-베트남간의 관계개선을 논의하는 등 분주한 첫날을 보냈습니다.
부시 대통령은 18일과 19일 양일간 베트남에서 열리는 APEC정상회담에 참석하기 위해 하노이에 도착했습니다.
이날 하노이에서 거행된 성대한 환영식에 참석한 후, 부시 대통령은 응옌민 트리엣 대통령 등 베트남 정부 관계관들과 회담을 가졌습니다.
백악관 대변인은 기자들에게 이날 정상회담에서 부시 대통령은 응옌민 트리엣 대통령에게 두 나라간의 교역 관계 정상화 계획이 의회에서 승인을 받을 수 있도록 노력할 것이라고 밝혔다고 말했습니다. 미국 하원은 이번 주초에 이같은 계획을 부결시킨 바 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 빌 클린턴 대통령에 이어 베트남을 방문한 미국의 두번째 국가원수입니다.
부시 대통령은 베트남에 머무는 동안 한국과 중국, 러시아, 일본 지도자들과 정상회담을 가질 예정입니다.

President Bush has spent his first day in Vietnam meeting with leaders to discuss economic reforms and improved relations between the two nations.
Mr. Bush arrived in Hanoi today (Friday) to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on Saturday and Sunday. Following a lavish welcoming ceremony in the capital, Hanoi, he met with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet and other officials.
A White House spokesman told reporters Mr. Bush assured his hosts he will work to get congressional approval for normalized trade relations between their two countries. The U.S. House of Representatives rejected such a measure this week.
President Bush is the second U.S. president to visit the country since the end of the Vietnam war. His predecessor, Bill Clinton, was the first.
Mr. Bush also is scheduled to hold talks with the leaders of South Korea, China, Russia and Japan while in Vietnam.
