미국 중간선거에서 다수당 지위를 탈환한 민주당이 차기 하원 원내대표에 메릴랜드주 출신의 스테니 호이어 의원을 선출했습니다. 민주당 의원들은 원내대표 자리를 놓고 예상치 못한 경합이 벌어졌음에도 불구하고 오는 1월에 개원하는 새 의회에서 서로 협력할 것을 약속했습니다.
앞서 이번 주에 낸시 펠로시 현 원내대표는 후임으로 펜실베니아주 출신의 존 머사 의원에 대한 지지를 표명했습니다. 이날 실시된 비밀 투표에서 호이어 현 원내총무는 149표의 지지를 얻어 86표를 얻은 머사 의원을 큰 표차로 눌러 선출됐습니다.
민주당은 앞서 이날 캘리포니아주 출신의 펠로시 의원을 하원의장으로 공식 선출했습니다. 펠로시 의원은 미국 역사상 첫 여성 하원의장으로 추대됐습니다.

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have pledged to work together when they take control in January, despite an unexpected contest over who would take the second-in-command position behind House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi.
Democratic House members elected Congressman of the state of Maryland to the House majority leader's position, after Pelosi unexpectedly announced her support for Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania earlier this week. In a secret ballot, Hoyer received 149 votes to Murtha's 86. Pelosi said today she had supported Murtha because of his efforts to drive the debate on the war in Iraq.
She acknowledged differences with Hoyer, a longtime political rival, but said he will make a magnificent contribution as majority leader. Hoyer, Pelosi's deputy in her current minority leader position, called Pelosi a person of deep values, keen intellect, and extraordinary political ability, and added he looks forward to continuing to work with her.
