Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has called for the swift arrest of those responsible for Tuesday's mass kidnapping at a government building in Baghdad.
At Baghdad University today (Wednesday), Mr. Maliki said the kidnappers were worse than extremists because they abducted intellectuals and prevented universities from carrying out their work.
Meanwhile, Iraq's minister of higher education (Abed Dhiab al-Ujaili) says he will stop attending ministry or Cabinet meetings until all the captives have been released.
Gunmen dressed as police commandos kidnapped scores of men on Tuesday from a research institute at Iraq's Higher Education Ministry. Officials say many of the hostages have since been freed.
Authorities initially said at least 100 people were abducted but later lowered that figure. Five senior police officers from Baghdad's Karradah district -- where the kidnapping took place -- have been detained for questioning.
In other news, at least eight people were killed and more than 30 others wounded in a car bomb explosion in central Baghdad today. Three other people died when a suicide car bomber attacked a funeral.
