민주당이 12년 만에 상.하 양원을 모두 장악한 것으로 공식 확정된 지 하루만인 10일 부시 대통령은 민주당 상원 대표로 내정된 해리 리드 의원과 만났습니다. 부시 대통령은 이밖에도 민주당 상원 지도부와 공통기반을 찾고 함께 협력해 나갈 것을 강조했습니다.
새로 구성된 의회가 개원하는 내년1월 상원의 다수당 원내총무가 될 것으로 예상되는 해리 리드 상원의원은 10일 백악관에서 부시대통령을 만났습니다. 이 만남에는 다수당 원내 부총무가 될 것으로 예상되는 딕 더반 상원의원도 자리를 함께 했습니다.
부시 대통령은 기자들에게 자신은 이들 의원들에게 공통된 현안을 해결하고자 하는 자신의 의도를 확신시켰다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 자신은 이번이 공화당과 민주당이 모두 똑같이 애국적이고 미래에 대해 우려하고 있으며 함께 협력할 수 있다는 것을 전 국민에게 보여줄 좋은 기회라고 생각한다는 입장이라고 말했습니다.
리드 대표는 부시 대통령과 만나 아주 훌륭한 논의를 했다고 말했습니다.
리드 대표는 이제 선거가 끝났고 전진을 위한 유일한 방법은 초당파주의와 열린자세를 가지고 결과를 얻어내는 것이라고 말했습니다. 리드 대표는 자신들은 결의를 다졌고 이제 그 결의를 실천할 것이라고 말했습니다.
더반 상원의원도 이번 만남에서 여러가지 중요한 사안들이 다뤄졌다고 말했습니다.
더반 의원은 자신들은 미국민 모두에게 너무나 중요한 이라크와 미군 그리고 미군 가족에 대해 논의했다고 말했습니다.
민주당은 지금까지 2천 8백명 이상의 미군이 전사한 이라크 전에 새로운 방향을 제시할 것을 촉구해 왔습니다. 일부 민주당 의원들은 미군의 점차적 철수를, 그리고 일부는 미군이 이라크를 떠나는 구체적인 시한을 정하기를 요구해 왔습니다.
민주당 지도자들은 또한 이란과 시리아 그리고 북한 문제에 있어서도 새로운 접근을 요구했습니다. 많은 의원들은 이들 국가들과의 외교적 교착상태를 해결하기 위한 방법으로 대화를 증가할 것을 요구해왔습니다.
또 다른 주요 사안은 존 볼튼 주 유엔 미국 대사에 관련한 것입니다. 민주당은 2005년 부시 대통령의 볼튼 대사 지명을 반대했고, 볼튼 대사는 그동안 일시적인 상원 휴회기간 중 임명 하에 활동해 왔으므로 새로 구성되는 의회가 개원하면 그 임기가 만료 되게 됩니다.
토니 스노우 백악관 대변인은 부시 대통령은 볼튼 대사가 업무를 훌륭히 수행했다고 생각한다고 말했습니다.
스노우 대변인은 볼튼 대사는 아주 훌륭한 유엔 대사였으므로 계속 유엔 대사를 역임할 기회를 가질 가치가 있다고 말했습니다.
하지만 조셉 바이든 상원의원을 포함한 주요 민주당 인사들은 이러한 가능성을 배제했습니다. 차기 상원에서 외교위원장이 될 가능성이 큰 바이든 의원은 볼튼 대사의 인준을 다시 고려할 의미가 없다고 본다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 백악관에서 회담을 마치고 워싱톤 외곽 미해병대 박물관의 개관식에 참석했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이 박물관은 방문객들에게 미 해병대가 됨으로서 얻게 되는 자부심을 체험할 수 있도록 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

One day after the opposition Democrats picked up the last Senate seat to be decided from Tuesday's election, gaining control of both houses of Congress, President Bush met with the party's Senate leader. Their talks come as Mr. Bush and Democratic Congressional leaders try to find common ground and stress they intend to work together.
Senator Harry Reid, who is expected to become Senate Majority Leader when the new Congress convenes in January, met with President Bush at the White House Friday. Also on hand was Senator Dick Durban, who is expected to become assistant majority leader. Mr. Bush told reporters he had assured the senators of his intention to solve common problems.
BUSH: "My attitude is about this is that there is a great opportunity to show the country that Republicans and Democrats are equally patriotic and concerned about the future and can work together."
Reid said the meeting had been, in his words, an "excellent discussion."
REID: "Elections are over, the only way to move forward is with bipartisanship and openness and to get some results. We have made a commitment, the four of us here today, so that is what we are going to do."
Senator Durbin said the meeting covered a number of important issues.
DURBIN: "We talked about Iraq and our soldiers and our families, which means so much to all us."
Democrats have urged a new direction to the war in Iraq, where more than 2-thousand-800 American troops have been killed. Some Democrats are calling for gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops and others for a specific deadline for when the United States will be out of the country.
Democratic leaders have also called for new approaches to dealing with Iran, Syria and North Korea. Many have called for increased dialogue with these countries as a way to resolve the diplomatic standoffs. Another key issue involves U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton. Democrats blocked Mr. Bush's nomination of Bolton in 2005 and he has been serving under a temporary recess appointment that expires when the new Congress convenes. White House spokesman Tony Snow says Mr. Bush believes Bolton has done a good job.
SNOW: "This is a guy who has been a terrific U.N. ambassador. He deserves an opportunity to stay."
However, key Democrats, including Senator Joseph Biden, are ruling this out. Biden, who is likely to become chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he sees no point in considering Bolton's nomination again.
After his White House talks, Mr. Bush attended the dedication of the National Museum of the Marine Corps outside Washington. He said the museum will allow visitors to experience the pride that comes with being a Marine.
