7일 열린 유엔 총회에서 파나마는 192개 회원국 중 164개국의 지지를 얻어 2년간 중남미 대륙을 대표하는 이사국 자격을 획득했습니다. 파나마는 이사국이 되기 위해 전체 투표의 2/3 이상 혹은 120표를 얻어야 했습니다.
한편 또 다른 후였던 과테말라와 베네주엘라는 지난주에 후보국 출마를 포기했습니다. 과테말라는 지난 47차 투표 중 단 한 차례를 제외하고 줄곧 베네주엘라를 앞섰지만 2/3 투표를 얻지는 못했습니다.
현재 중남미 대륙을 대표하는 이사국은 아르헨티나입니다.

Panama has been elected to the United Nations Security Council, in a compromise move to end a protracted deadlock between Guatemala and Venezuela.
The 192-member General Assembly vote today (Tuesday) gave Panama 164 votes to win the two-year, Latin American seat on the Council. The Central American country needed to obtain a two-thirds majority of the balloting, or 120 votes, to win the seat being vacated by Argentina at the end of this year.
Last week, Guatemala and Venezuela withdrew their competing bids for the seat, which is reserved for Central and South America.
Guatemala had led Venezuela in all but one of 47 rounds of voting, but failed to win the necessary two-thirds majority to win.
