네팔 국경에서 중국군 병사들의 공격을 받았던 티벳 난민 41명이, 3주의 험난한 여정 끝에 인도에 도착했습니다.
인권단체들에 따르면 티벳에서 네팔로 히말라야 산맥을 넘어 탈출을 시도했던 난민은 모두 75명이었습니다. 23일 인도 뭄바이에 도착한 난민들은 기자들에게 나머지 32명의 행방에 대해서는 잘 모른다고 말했습니다. 32명 중에는 중국군에 체포된 9명의 어린이도 포함되어 있습니다.
티벳을 탈출한 난민들은 지난달 30일 중국군의 공격으로 적어도 한 명 이상이 숨졌다고 말했습니다. 이날 중국군의 공격 사실은 루마니아 사진기자의 비디오 카메라에 기록됐고, 미국 정부는 중국 정부에 공식 항의서를 보내기도 했습니다.
중국 정부는 난민들이 중국 병사들을 공격했고, 자기방어 차원에서 대응한 것이라는 입장입니다. 하지만 티벳운동 단체들은 이 날 찍힌 영상물은 난민들이 무장도 하지 않고 병사들을 등지고 있었으며, 아무런 저항도 하지 않았음을 보여준다고 말했습니다.

Forty-one refugees have survived a three-week trek from Tibet to India, despite being attacked by Chinese troops near the Nepal border.
Human rights groups say 75 people originally attempted to escape across the Himalayan Mountains from Tibet to Nepal. The refugees told reporters in New Delhi today (Monday) they do not know what happened to the 32 others, including at least nine children who were arrested by Chinese troops.
The refugees said Chinese troops attacked them September 30th, killing at least one person. This incident, which was caught on videotape by a Romanian cameraman, prompted the United States to lodge a formal protest with China. The European Union has urged China to investigate the incident.
Chinese officials say troops shot in self-defense after the refugees attacked the soldiers. However, the International Campaign for Tibet organization says a videotape shows the Tibetans had their backs to the soldiers, were unarmed, and offered no resistance.
