이번 운동에 자원봉사자로 참여하고 있는 대학생인 아이샤 라힘씨는 미국 내 이슬람 신자들에게 투표는 9/11 테러사태 이후 어느 때보다 더 중요해졌다고 말합니다.
라힘씨는 현재 이슬람 신자들에게 좋지 않은 일들이 많이 벌어지고 있다면서 이에 맞서 목소리를 내는 것은 항의의 표시로서 뿐아니라 현재 이슬람 신자들에게 나쁜 쪽으로 일어나고 있는 변화를 바꾸기 위해서도 매우 중요하다고 말합니다.
물론 다가오는 선거에서 이슬람 신자들이 얼마나 투표에 참여할지는 누구도 알 수 없습니다. 하지만 최근의 조사결과는 이들의 투표참여율이 매우 높을 것임을 보여주고 있습니다. 이번 운동의 정치자문을 맡고 있는 후세인 무키트씨가 주도한 미국 내 이슬람계의 투표행태에 대한 조사에 따르면 이슬람 신자들은 오랫동안 자신들이 투표해도 생활에 아무런 변화도 없을 것이라고 생각해 왔습니다. 하지만 이런 생각은 2001년 9/11 사태 이후 변했습니다. 이들은 이제 투표를 하지 않으면 민권 뿐아니라 다른 여러 분야에서 정치적으로 부정적 결과가 있게 될 것으로 생각하고 있습니다.

The group is using state-of-the-art information technologies - and working with other voter mobilization groups -- to boost voter registration and encourage political participation among disparate Muslim communities across the United States. As Mohamed Elshinnawi reports, many American Muslims believe their votes in the upcoming elections could be especially important to protecting their civil rights in this post-9/11 era.
TEXT: The nationwide campaign is being called Voting Is Power, and its three-prong objective is comprehensive Muslim-American voter registration, voter education and election-day mobilization. We have to take our souls to the polls and make sure that we cast that ballot to protect not only the civil liberties and the civil rights of Muslim Americans, but also the rights of all Americans, because when any group is victimized by civil rights and civil liberties erosions, we are all victimized. Benjamin Franklin, the founding father got it right, He said: He who is willing to sacrifice our liberty for the sake of security will have neither.
TEXT: Many American Muslims believe one of the most significant threats to civil liberties, privacy and democratic traditions, is the so-called Patriot Act - a measure passed by Congress which broadly expanded law enforcement surveillance and investigative powers, in some cases without court warrant.

The voting for Muslim Americans had become more important after September the 11th, because we need to have a voice and there are many things that are occurring against Muslims, so it is even important for us to have a voice out against these actions, not only having a protest but changing the laws that are being changed now against us.
TEXT: Of course, no one can be certain whether or how or in what numbers American Muslims will vote in the upcoming election. But new research suggests there could be a strong turnout. Hussein Mukit is a political advisor to the Voting Is Power campaign. He directed two recent studies of American Muslim voting patterns. The studies indicate that while American Muslims believed for a long time that their voting would not make any difference in their lives, that view changed after the terrorist attacks of 2001, and most American Muslims now believe that failing to vote could have negative political consequences, not just on their civil liberties but on a wide range of issues:

Erosion of civil liberties after 9/11 is a huge issue for the Muslim voters, the second most important issue seems to be immigration, the third is foreign policy then education and health care.
TEXT: Mukit says a major focus of the get-out-the-vote campaign will be young American Muslim voters. But the campaign is casting a wider net, too, by offering electronic voter registration in mosques across the U.S, and providing background information about candidates on its campaign website. Voting Is Power organizers note that, almost 85 percent of eligible Muslim voters are now registered.
The Muslim American Society, which is leading the Muslim voters' campaign, says it is also targeting individual states and congressional districts where the races for seats in the US congress will be so tight that Muslim voter-turnout could be a decisive factor in the outcomes.
The Muslim American voter mobilization campaign has enlisted partners in the Hispanic community, the League of Women Voters, the United Church of Christ, the Jewish Shalom Center and the Interfaith Alliance, the largest interfaith organization in the country that promotes civic participation. "I think that just as other faith communities have been organized in showing their strength at the grassroots level, I think that is the key for the Muslim American community, and I really do think that as their population grows and hopefully they will have their first Muslim elected member of congress at the end of the year, and so that will begin to raise awareness that the religious and ethnic face of this country is changing and candidates need to adapt and listen to other Americans.
TEXT: Besides supporting a Muslim American candidate running for Congress in Minnesota, the Voting Is Power campaign is organizing a series of town hall meetings with congressional candidates across the U.S. The mobilization group has established telephone call centers to remind Muslim voters not only to register but also to actually go to the polls on November 7th.
