(Eng)

The United States and Japan have pledged to work together to implement sanctions against North Korea because of its nuclear weapon test last week.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met her Japanese counterpart Taro Aso in Tokyo (today/Wednesday) to discuss the U.N. Security Council sanctions.

Rice said North Korea's nuclear test was "unacceptable." But she added that Washington is not seeking to escalate the crisis.

Rice is to travel to South Korea, China and Russia this week for talks on implementing sanctions. The limits mostly block trading of weapons equipment with North Korea.

Russian officials said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the issue with Rice in a telephone conversation today.

South Korea's government has welcomed the sanctions, but says it will continue two infrastructure projects in the North.
