Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says his country is prepared to defend itself against an Israeli attack, while Israeli officials say they have no intention of striking Syria.
Mr. Assad said today (Sunday) that Israel has given up on the Middle East peace process, forcing Syria to remain prepared for war.
Israeli officials denied having plans to attack Syria, and called Mr. Assad's comments a cause for concern.
Peace talks between Israel and Syria stopped in 2000. In exchange for peace, Syria has demanded Israel return the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.
