미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 7일, 새로 건조되는 항공모함 명명식에 참석해 미군의 노고를 치하했습니다.
전현직 대통령인 부쉬 부자와 가족들은 이날, 수십명의 내빈들과 함께 버지니아의 한 조선소에서 거행된 명명식에 참석했습니다. 이날 명명식에서 부쉬 대통령은 앞선 세대의 군인들과 여성들의 기여를 지적하고, 현재 새로운 세대들에 이루어지고 있는 고귀한 희생을 치하했습니다.
총 60억달러의 건조비가 투입되는 이 항공모함은 2차대전때 해군 조종사로 참전해 무공훈장을 받은 바 있는 전 대통령이며 부쉬 대통령의 부친의 이름을 따서 [조지 H.W. 부쉬호]로 명명됐습니다.
이날 명명식을 가진 부쉬호는 길이가 총 333미터로 5천여명의 승조원을 태우고, 거의 2헥타르 넓이의 갑판에는 80대의 항공기를 실을 수 있는 니미츠급으로, 2008년 완공될 예정입니다.
미 해군의 전통에 따라 이날 공식적으로 새 항공모함의 이름을 명명하면서 포도주병을 부딪쳐 깨뜨리는 영광은 부쉬 대통령의 딸인 도로 부쉬 코크 양이 차지했습니다.

President Bush has paid tribute to the U.S. military, at a ceremony naming an aircraft carrier after his father, former president George H.W. Bush.
Both the current and former presidents and their family joined dozens of invited guests today (Saturday) at a shipyard in (the eastern state of) Virginia. President Bush noted the contributions of earlier generations of U.S. servicemen and women, and he paid tribute to the sacrifices being made by a new generation.
The six billion-dollar Navy aircraft carrier was christened in honor of the 82-year-old former president, who is a decorated veteran of World War Two. The ship measures more than 333 meters long and will accommodate more than five thousand Navy personnel. It also will carry more than 80 planes on a flight deck measuring almost two hectares.
In a Navy tradition, a woman -- in this case, the daughter of the honoree Doro Bush Koch -- broke a bottle of sparkling wine across the ship's bow as it was officially christened.
The former president earlier spoke to the crowd and called this a great day in his life.
