이란의 마무드 아마디네자드 대통령은 모든 인간은 존중되어야 하며, 모든 인간은 위엄있는 삶과 정의를 향유할 권리가 있다고 말했습니다. 그러나 많은 사람들은 현재 이란에서 벌어지고 있는 일을 생각하면 이런 말이 별의미가 없는 것이라고 말합니다.
최근 국제 인권감시단체인 [국제사면위원회]는 이란에서 벌어지고 있는 인권운동가들과 소수민족 운동가들과 표현과 결사의 자유에 대한 그들의 권리를 평화적인 방법으로 행사하는 다른 사람들을 겨냥한 새로운 체포와 구금을 비난하는 성명을 발표했습니다.
현재 이란에서 구금돼 있는 인사들 가운데 한 사람으로 민주화운동가이며, 전 이란 국회의원이었던 알리 악바르 무사비-호이니 씨가 있습니다. 그는 지난 6월 테헤란에서 여성의 권리를 요구하는 평화적인 시위를 벌이다가 체포됐습니다.
지난 9월 21일에 무사비-호이니 씨는 삼엄한 감시 속에 그의 아버지의 추모예배에 참석하는 것이 허용됐습니다. 호이니 씨는 추모예배 때 자신이 에빈 교도소에서 자기 신념을 비난하고, 자기 행동들을 참회하며, 이란 최고지도자 알리 하메네이에게 사면을 호소하라면서 고문을 받았다고 폭로했습니다.
아마드 바테비 씨도 현재 에빈 교도소에 수감 중이며 위독한 상태입니다. 바테비 씨는 1999년의 학생민주화운동 시위자들의 하나의 상징 인물이 됐습니다. 한 사진은 그가 보안군에 구타당한 동료 시위자의 피묻은 셔츠를 들고 있는 모습을 보여주고 있습니다. 결국 10년 징역형을 선고받은 바테비 씨는 지난 2005년에 일시 가석방됐습니다. 그는 미국의 한 신문과 인터뷰를 한 후에 지난 7월에 다시 수감됐습니다.
[국제사면위원회]는 아마드 바테비 씨의 신체적, 정신적 건강이 악화되고 있으며, 그는 고문의 결과로 생긴 의료 문제에 대한 적절한 치료를 거부당하고 있다고 지적했습니다. 미국은 아마드 바테비 씨와 인권 수호를 위해 활동하다가 투옥된 모든 사람들의 석방을 촉구했습니다.
미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 최근 유엔 총회에서 행한 연설에서 이란 국민에게 그들은 억압이 아닌 다른 어떤 것을 누릴 자격이 있다고 말했습니다. 그것은 이란 국민 자신들의 미래를 스스로 결정할 수 있는 기회와 사람들의 지능과 재능에 따라 보답받을 수 있는 경제와 사람들의 엄청난 잠재력을 발휘할 수 있도록 허용되는 사회라고 부쉬 대통령은 밝혔습니다.
현재 이같은 미래를 가로막고 있는 가장 큰 장애는 이란의 지배자들이 이란 국민의 자유를 거부하는 것이라고 부쉬 대통령은 지적했습니다.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad has said that "all human beings should be respected. . . .all have the right to a dignified life and to enjoy justice."
But many say these words are meaningless in light of what is happening in Iran. The monitoring group Amnesty International has issued a statement condemning "the new arrests and detentions in Iran targeting human rights activists, minority community activists, and others peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and association."
One of those detained is democratic activist and former Iranian parliamentarian Ali Akbar Mousavi-Khoini. In June he was arrested during a peaceful demonstration for women's rights in Tehran. On September 21, under heavy guard, he was allowed to attend a memorial service for his father. At the service, Mr. Khoini called out that he was being tortured in Evin prison "to denounce my beliefs, to repent for my activities, and to ask forgiveness from [Iranian supreme leader Ali] Khamenei."
Ahmad Batebi is also in grave danger in Evin prison. Mr. Batebi became a symbol for pro-democracy student demonstrators in 1999. A widely reproduced photograph shows him holding up the bloody shirt of a fellow protestor who had been beaten by security forces. Eventually sentenced to ten years, Mr. Batebi was temporarily released in 2005. He was re-arrested in July after giving an interview to a U.S. newspaper. Amnesty International says Ahmad Batebi's physical and psychological health is deteriorating, and he is being denied treatment for medical problems that are the result of torture.
The U.S. has called for the release of Ahmad Batebi and all those imprisoned for defending human rights. In his address to the United Nations General Assembly, President Bush told the Iranian people they deserve something other than repression:
"An opportunity to determine your own future, an economy that rewards your intelligence and your talents, and a society that allows you to fulfill your tremendous potential."
"The greatest obstacle to this future," said Mr. Bush, "is that your rulers have chosen to deny you liberty."
