미국 동북부, 펜실베이니아주 필라델피아 서부지역, 시립 동물원과 또 주민들의 85%가 빈곤층인 동네가 바라 보이는 언덕 위에 현대으로 멋지게 지어진 고등학교건물이 자리잡고 있습니다. 마이크로소프트 미래학교로 불리는 이 학교는 마이크로소프트가 세운 첫 학교입니다. 개교 후 첫 강의에 참석한 미국의 소리 기자가 자세한 내용 전해드립니다.
강의에 참석한 신입생 170명은 새로운 학교에서의 준비 뿐 아니라 미래에 대한 준비도 돼 있는 학생들입니다. 이들은 펜이나 종이 또는 교과서를 사용하지 않습니다. 대신 학생 각자에게는 마이크로소프트사가 이 학교를 위해 특별히 개발한 무선 컴퓨터가 지급됩니다. 이 학교 학생들은 자신의 능력에 맞춰 강좌를 선택할 수 있으며 교사들과 부모들은 학생들의 진전상황을 지켜볼 수 있습니다.
마이크로소프트사는 필라델피아에 설치한 이 학교에 특별한 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 마이크로소프트사는 자사가 처음 세운 이 학교의 건물설계와 교과내용 결정을 위해 교육구청과 협의했습니다. 빌 게이츠 회장은 전세계 교육체제에 있어 훌륭한 본이 되도록 이 학교를 만들었다고 말합니다.
빌 게이츠 회장은 이 학교는 배움을 변화시키는 작업을 위해 위대한 인물들과 절차, 기술 등을 활용할때 무엇이 가능한지를 보여주게 될 것이라고 말합니다. 그는 이 학교는 이미 전세계 학교들이 자기계발과 지도력의 문화를 창조하도록 도울 재원개발 등 많은 중요한 개혁을 이뤄냈다고 설명합니다.
이처럼 높은 목표를 설정한 학교에 다닌다는 사실은 재학생, 라이언 윌러군에게는 약간 부담스런 일이기도 합니다.
윌러군은 원래 군사학교에 진학하고 싶었고 또 마이크로소프트 미래학교에 대해 별로 알지 못했기 때문에 처음에는 별로 내키지 않았다고 말합니다. 하지만 이 학교에 대해 알아본 뒤에는 기대가 높아지면서 입학하기로 마음먹었다고 윌러군은 말합니다.
윌러의 같은반 학생인, 올해 14살인 무케어 웨어링-구덴은 미래의 학교에 다니는 데 대해 아무런 후회가 없었습니다. 이미 다섯 살 때 기상학자가 되고 싶었던 구덴은 이 학교에서 갖게 될 기회가 그런 꿈을 이루도록 도와줄 것으로 생각하고 있습니다. 구덴은 다음 세대의 학생이 되는 것을 즐겁게 받아들이고 있습니다.
구덴은 자신을 비롯한 이 학교 학생 170명 모두는 지금 훌륭한 기회를 맞고 있으며 이 세상을 변화시킬 수 있을 것이라면서, 그렇게 되면 이 세상은 아마도 더 살기 좋은 곳이 될 것이라고 말합니다.
이 학교의 학생 수는 앞으로 4년에 걸쳐 750명으로 늘어나지만 학생 구성은 변하지 않을 것입니다. 학생들의 75%는 필라델피아에서 가장 가난하고 범죄가 많은 필라델피아 서부지역 출신이 차지하게 될 것입니다. 이 지역의 학교들은 컴퓨터는 물론 교과서도 충분하지 않고, 또 상당수는 난방장치도 없습니다.
다른 모든 공립학교와 마찬가지로 마이크로소프트 미래학교도 수업료가 없습니다. 다른 학교들과는 달리 학생들의 입학은 추첨으로 이뤄집니다. 첫 신입생 170명은 신청자 1천5백명 중에서 추첨으로 뽑혔습니다.
이 미래의 학교는 마이크로소프트사의 지도 아래 이미 다른 나라들에서도 설립이 이뤄지고 있습니다. 이 회사 고위간부인 크레이그 문디씨는 이 학교를 미래의 본보기로 삼으려는 계획을 늘 갖고 있다고 말합니다.
문디씨는 이 학교는 어린이들과 공동체의 미래를 위한 전세계 각국의 교육체제 건설 의지를 평가할 기본틀이 될 것이라고 설명합니다.
마이크로소프트 미래학교 학생들은 이같은 일을 선도해 나갈 것으로 기대됩니다. 또 교사들과 교육행정가들은 이 학교에서 제공되는 기술과 자원을 학생들이 어떻게 사용하는지를 지켜보고 분석하면서 이로 부터 배우게 될 것입니다.

Up on a hill, overlooking the Philadelphia Zoo and a West Philadelphia neighborhood where 85% of the people live in poverty, sits a sleek, shiny brand new High School. It is called the Microsoft School of the Future and it is the first one in the world. VOA's Stasia DeMarco attended the first day of class and got a peek into what's so unique about the next generation of global learning.
The 170 freshmen about to start classes here are not only ready for school, but for the future. They will not use pens, paper or textbooks. Instead, each one will be given a wireless laptop computer, with software created by Microsoft specifically for this school's needs. The programs allow each child to learn at his or her own pace… and educators and parents to monitor their progress.
Microsoft has a special interest in this Philadelphia school. It partnered with the school district to design the building and the curriculum - a first for the software giant. Company Chairman Bill Gates says the Microsoft School of the Future is meant to be the model for struggling education systems around the world.
What this school represents is what is possible when you apply great people, processes and technology to the task of transforming learning. This school has already produced a number of important innovations, including resources that will help schools around the world create a culture of self-improvement and leadership.
The idea of attending a school with such high aspirations was a bit daunting for Ryan Wheeler:
At first I wasn't really too psyched about coming cause I wanted to go to a military school and I didn't know much about School of the Future so I was like 'it's new. I don't want to go. I don't know what I will be getting myself into' So then I was like…I started doing research on it and I was like, 'Well I'm psyched. I'll go. I'll go.' (laughs)
Her classmate, 14-year-old Mahcaiyah (muh-KYE-uh) Wearing-Gooden, had no doubts about attending the School of the Suture. She's wanted to be a climatologist since she was five years old and feels sure the opportunities she'll get here will lead her to her dream job. But she has a deeper connection to being part of the next generation of students:
This is our time. This is us. All 170 of us can make a change in this world. And if we do that it can probably be considered a better place.
Over the next four years, Microsoft High's student population will grow to 750 as new freshman classes are added. But the make-up of the student body won't change. 75 percent will come from the surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhood, one of the poorest and most crime-ridden parts of the city. Schools here don't have enough textbooks - let alone computers - and many don't even have heat.
Like all public schools, Microsoft High charges no tuition fees. Unlike most schools, students apply to attend and are chosen by lottery. The 170 students in the first class were among 1500 applicants.
The school of the future is already being replicated in other countries with guidance from Microsoft. Top Company Executive Craig Mundie says there was always a plan to use this school as a prototype for future endeavors:
This school really represents the benchmark on a global basis that will be used to assess each country's own aspirations about building an educational system for the future of their children and their community.
And the students at the Microsoft School of the Future will are expected to lead the way. As their use of the technology and resources provided at this unique school is monitored and analyzed, it will be the teachers and administrators worldwide who are will be learning from them.
