핀란드 수도 헬싱키에서 아시아와 유럽 38개국 지도자들이 참가한 가운데 경제 및 정치 문제에 초점을 맞춘 이틀 일정의 아시아-유럽 정상 회의, 약칭 아셈이 개막됐습니다.
10일 개막 연설에서 유럽연합, EU 순번제 의장국인 핀란드의 마티 반하넨 총리는 기후 변화와 에너지, 안보 문제가 이번 정상회의의 주요 의제가 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
반하넨 총리는 또한 이번 정상 회의에서 테러리즘과 세계적인 건강 위협 그밖의 조직 범죄에 관한 다자간 회담 기회도 제공될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다. 반하넨 총리는 또 인도와 몽골, 파키스탄이 2년만에 한번씩 만나는 이번 정상 회의에 동참하도록 초청될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
반하넨 총리는 EU 가입을 모색하고 있는 불가리아와 루마니아 역시 이번 회의에 초청될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
이보다 앞서 EU관계관들은 북한의 핵무기 개발 계획을 종식시키기 위해 북한을 설득하기 위한 국제 노력에 앞장서고 있는 남한과 중국, 일본 지도자들과 회담했습니다.

Leaders from 38 Asian and European nations have opened two days of economic and political talks in the Finnish capital.
In an opening address today (Sunday), Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, who chairs the rotating EU presidency, said climate change, energy and security issues would be high on the summit agenda.
He also said the summit will provide a chance for multi-lateral talks on terrorism, global health threats and organized crime.
Additionally, the prime minister said India, Mongolia and Pakistan will be invited to join the grouping, which meets every two years. He said Bulgaria and Romania, who are seeking entry into the EU, will also be invited.
EU officials earlier met with the leaders of South Korea and China, who together with Japan are key to international efforts to persuade North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program.
