납치된 한 소녀의 안타까운 사연때문에 오랫동안 일하던 직장을 그만두고 이를 기록 영화로 제작한 마음 따스한 영화제작자 부부가 있습니다.
어느날 오후 한때, 안개처럼 낯익은 사람들곁에서 증발해 버린 13세 일본인 소녀, 요코다 메구미의 사연을 화면에 담은 기록 영화, <납치> 영어로 을 제작한 부부, 패티 김씨와 크리스 쉐리던씨의 기록영화를 만들게된 배경을 소개해 드리는 보도입니다.

쉐리던씨는 프로듀서로 일했고, 아내 패티는 특파원 이었습니다. 그러다가 피랍 일본인들에 관한 이야기때문에 이들의 인생행로는 바뀌게 됩니다. 방과후, 귀가길에 흔적도 없이 사라져 버린 13살 소녀의 이야기를 듣게 되면서 패티김씨는 그 사연의 뭔가가 자기 부부를 동요시켰고, 그 후 몇 년 동안 그 이야기는 뇌리에서 사라지지 않았다고 말합니다. 그것이 2002년의 일이었습니다.
쉐리던 씨는 메구미양의 이야기에 큰 충격을 받아 다니던 직장을 그만두고, 그 사연을 영화로 만들기로 결정했다고 말합니다. 북한 정권은2004년 처음으로 북한 간첩들이 공작원들을 좀 더 실제 일본인들처럼 가장할 수 있도록 훈련시키기 위해서 1970년 대에 일본민간인 13명을 납치했음을인정했습니다. 그들 가운데 13살 난 여학생 메구미 요코다도 있었습니다. 메구미는 1977년 어느날 오후 증발한 듯 사라졌습니다. 메구미 납치사건 전말은 1989년 까지 확인되지 않았습니다.
메구미양의 가슴아픈 사연은 패티 김씨와 크리스 쉐리던 씨의 마음을 크게 감동시켰습니다. 쉐리던 씨는 그래서 자신들은 납치된 이들의 가족들에게 연락을 취했고, 특별히 메구미의 가족과 연락이 닿았을 때 이들은 무엇인가를 하고 싶어했고 그래서 자신과 아내 패티는 거기서 부터 이 작업을 시작하게 됐다고 쉐리단씨는 말했습니다.
패티 김씨 부부는 메구미의 가족을 만나기 위해 2003년 일본으로 향했습니다. 패티 김씨는 자신들은 카메라와 신용 카드만 가지고 일본으로 날아갔다고 말합니다. 그리고 그곳에서 많은 정신나간듯 보이는 서구의 독립 영화 제작자가 하는 식으로 자신들도 그렇게 영화 제작에 뛰어들었다고 말합니다.
패티 김씨와 쉐리던 씨는 2003년과 2005년 일본을 3차례 방문했고 100개 이상의 테잎 분량을 촬영했습니다. 그리고 그 기록 영화에는 <납치: 요코다 메구미 이야기>라는 제목이 붙었습니다.
85분 길이의 이 기록 영화는 거의 30년에 이르는 기간을 다룹니다. 과거와 미래로 시간이 넘나들면서 이 영화는 어떻게 가족들이 자신들이 사랑하는 가족의 일원이 사라지게 됐는지 알게되며, 이런 운명이 아니었다면 정상적이었을 자신들의 삶을 희생하면서 사랑하는 이들의 귀국을 위해 어떤 노력을 펼쳐왔는지를 기록합니다.
결과적으로, 2002년 납치된 사람들 가운데 5명이 귀환하지만 메구미를 포함한 나머지 8명은 사망한 것으로 보도됩니다. 패티 김씨는 자신은 인간의 슬픔과, 고통 그리고 상실에 관한 인간의 이야기를 하고 싶다고 말합니다. 그러면서 그러한 주제는 전 세계 어느 곳에 있는 사람들도 공감 할 수 있는 주제들이라고 덧붙입니다.

크리스 쉐리던 씨는 대부분 사람들은 영화 촬영과 편집을 끝내고 영화제에서 그것을 선보이면 모든게 끝났다고 생각하지만 실제로 영화를 만드는 것은 그때 부터가 시작이라면서 들어오는 돈은 없는데 계속해서 지출을 해야한다고 말합니다. 그는 실제로 영화를 홍보하고 판촉할 때 드는 돈이 거의 영화 제작에 들어가는 비용과 맞먹는다고 말합니다.
패티 김씨는 어려움에도 불구하고 영화 <납치>의 제작은 값진 경험이었다고 말합니다. 패티 김씨는 영화 제작을 통해 만난 사람들, 그리고 제작의 여정은 실로 일생 잊지못할 값진 경험이었다고 말합니다.

Kim was born in Korea, and Sheridan is a Canadian. They are a couple who gave up a stable lifestyle to pursue their dream of independent filmmaking.

In 2004, the North Korean regime acknowledged for the first time that North Korean spies abducted 13 Japanese civilians in the 1970's to train their agents to better impersonate Japanese.
Among them was Megumi Yokota a 13-year-old schoolgirl who seemed to have vanished into thin air one afternoon in 1977. The truth of her abduction was not confirmed until 1989. The story deeply touched Kim and Sheridan.

"So we contacted the families, in particular we contacted the family of Megumi Yokota and immediately they said yes, they wanted to do something and we just kind of took it from there.

The journey started with a trip to Japan to meet Megumi's family in 2003.

"We took our camera and ourselves and our credit cards and flew to Japan and did what a lots of crazy western independent filmmakers would do, they just do it."

Three trips to Japan between 2003 and 2005, more than one hundred tapes filmed, and the documentary entitled "Abduction The Megumi Yokota Story" is born.
The eighty-five minute film covers a span of almost three decades. By jumping back and forth in time, the film documents how families of the abductees learned about their loved ones' disappearance and campaigned for their release, often at the expense of their otherwise normal personal lives.
As a result, five abductees were returned in 2002. The remaining eight were announced dead, including Megumi Yokota.

Abduction was featured in a number of film festivals, including the 2006 Independent Film Festival of Boston, Toronto International Film Festival, and the Maryland Film Festival. It also received an audience award in the best documentary category at the 2006 Slamdance Film Festival. But it has not been an easy path.

"Most people think when you finished a film, when you finished editing and you showed it at your first film festival, that you are done, it's all over, but actually the whole story of making a film is just beginning. You are just starting. There is no money coming in, you are just continuously putting in money. In fact you put as much in when you are promoting it and marketing it as you did while you were making it."

Despite the difficulties, Kim says the experience was worth it.
