China has strongly condemned an Israeli air strike in Lebanon Tuesday that killed four U.N. observers, including a Chinese national.
China's foreign ministry says the government is deeply shocked by the attack, which killed Chinese observer Du Zhaoyu. Du was part of a Chinese contingent of 180 peacekeepers working for the U.N. mission in Lebanon.
The foreign ministry says China's Assistant Foreign Minister (Zhai Jun) summoned the Israeli ambassador in Beijing (Yehoyada Haim) to demand Israel apologize to the observer's family.
The Xinhua news agency says the Israeli ambassador apologized for the incident and promised his government would carry out a full investigation.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing says the international community should try harder to stop the fighting and revive the Middle East peace process as soon as possible.
China says all sides in the conflict, and "especially" Israel, should take steps to ensure the safety of U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon.
