The United Nations has warned that bird flu is spreading more rapidly around the globe and urged countries to develop pandemic plans.

Top U.N. bird flu expert David Nabarro said in a Geneva conference Monday that between 2003 and 2006 the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus was detected in 16 countries, but in the past six months alone it has spread to double that number of countries. He says the new speed is a serious cause of concern.

The U.N. says countries in Asia, Europe, and the Mideast have successfully stopped bird flu from spreading domestically by killing sick birds and vaccinating health flocks. But it warns that such methods are very hard to enforce in Africa, including Nigeria, where experts say more than one strain may exist, posing a greater risk to humans.

World Health Organization deputy director Margaret Chan called the H5N1 bird flu virus a devastating disease, noting that it kills more than half of people who get it. Bird flu has killed 131 people since 2003, mostly in Asia. Experts fear the disease could mutate into a human form that can spread from person to person and kill millions.
