현재 자택연금중인 버마의 야당 지도자 아웅산 수지 여사를 면담한 유엔의 이브라힘 감바리 정치담당 특사는 20일, 수지 여사의 건강상태가 양호해 보였다고 전했습니다.
그러나 그의 방문이 수지 여사의 석방이 임박했다는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니라고 밝혔습니다. 감바리 특사는 이날, 3일간의 버마 방문을 마치고 방콕을 떠나기에 앞서 로이터통신에 이같이 말발했습니다. 감바리 특사는 20일에 랑군의 한 영빈관에서 약 1시간동안 수지 여사를 면담했습니다.
감바리 특사는 버마의 집권 군사평의회가 민주주의를 회복하고 인권 위반을 종식시키도록 압력을 가하기 위해 버마를 방문했습니다. 이같은 노력의 일환으로 감바리 대사는 이날, 버마의 최고실권자인 탄 쉐 수석장군과 회담을 가졌으며, 19일에는 야당 민족민주연맹 관계자들과 만났습니다.

A senior United Nations official who met with detained Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she appears to be in good health, but that his visit does not mean her release is imminent.
U.N. political affairs envoy Ibrahim Gambari made the comments today (Saturday) to the Reuters news agency as he prepared to fly out from Bangkok after a three-day mission to Burma.
Gambari met with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for about an hour Saturday at a guest house in Rangoon.
He was in Burma to press the ruling military junta to restore democracy and end human rights violations. As part of that effort, Gambari also met today (Saturday) with Burma's top general (Senior General Than Shwe) and on Friday with members of the opposition National League for Democracy (N.L.D.).
This is the first visit to Burma by a high-level U.N. representative in more than two years.
