The World Bank says rapid economic expansion in China and India is driving up production of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
The international development bank says factories, cars, furnaces and other gas-producing sites around the world are now pumping out more than 24 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year -- a 15-percent increase over a 10-year period (1992-2002).
A report by the bank (released in Washington Tuesday) says the United States and other heavily industrialized nations are still the biggest carbon-dioxide producers. China, however, is now the world's second-largest polluter.
The World Bank says China's carbon-dioxide emissions have jumped by one-third (during the same 10-year period), and the rise in greenhouse gases from India was even greater -- 57 percent.
The bank's survey says all countries are vulnerable to climate change, and it calls on world leaders to find creative solutions to ease global warming.
