마흐무드 아흐마디네자드 이란 대통령은 이란이 핵발전소에서 사용될 수 있는 수준의 농축 우라늄을 생산했다고 선언했습니다. 아흐마디네자드 대통령은 11일, 이란 전국에 방영된 텔레비전 방송 연설로 이같이 선언하고 이란은 미국이 추정하는 것처럼 핵무기 개발을 추구하지는 않는다고 또 다시 주장했습니다.
농축 우라늄은 핵발전소용 연료와 핵무기 제조에 모두 사용될 수 있습니다. 이란 핵에너지기구 의장인 골람 레자 아그하자데흐 부통령도 나탄즈 시험 우라늄 농축공장에서 164개의 원심분리기로 우라늄 재처리과정이 시작됐다고 밝혔습니다. 아그하자데흐 부통령은 다음 달 까지 3천 개의 원심분리기들이 가동될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
이란은 영국,프랑스, 독일 등 유럽연합 3국과 이란 핵문제를 협상하는 동안 2003년에 원심분리기 가동을 중단했다가 금년 초에 협상이 결렬되자 원심분리기를 재가동하기 시작했습니다.
미국 백악관은 이란이 핵활동에 있어서 잘못된 방향으로 가고 있다고 지적하고 미국 정부는 이란 핵문제를 유엔 안전보장 이사회에서 논의토록 하겠다고 말했습니다.
한편, 국제원자력기구IAEA의 모하메드 엘바라데이 사무총장이 이번 주에 이란을 방문할 예정이며 이달 말쯤 이란 핵문제에 관한 보고서를 유엔 안전보장 이사회에 제출할 계획으로 있습니다.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran has enriched uranium to a level used in nuclear power plants.
In a televised address late Tuesday, Mr. Ahmadinejad repeated his assertion that Iran is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons, as the United States alleges. Enriched uranium can be used in weapons as well as power plants.
The head of Iran's atomic energy organization said the pilot enrichment plant in Natanz began processing uranium in 164 centrifuges. Gholamreza Aghazadeh said three thousand centrifuges will be operational by next March.
Iran shut down the centrifuges in 2003, while negotiating with Britain, France and Germany over the fate of its nuclear program. Tehran began reactivating the program earlier this year.
The White House said Iran is moving in the wrong direction with its nuclear activities, and a spokesman said the Bush administration will discuss the matter with the United Nations Security Council.
